The Warzone PS4 shutdown is now tied to the start of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1, when Activision says Call of Duty: Warzone will stop working on both PS4 and Xbox One. Modern Warfare 4 itself launches on Friday, October 23, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and it won’t be released on PS4 or Xbox One at all, which leaves Nigerian players on older consoles only a few weeks of Warzone.

In its Modern Warfare 4 announcement, Activision said “Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and XBOX One will no longer be playable starting with Season 1.” Its support page puts the cut-off at the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06. Activision hasn’t published an exact calendar date for Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 yet, so treat the shutdown as close to the game’s launch window rather than a fixed day.

Why the Warzone PS4 shutdown matters for Nigerian players
Plenty of Nigerian players still game on a PS4 at home or in gaming centres, largely because a PS5 remains a big purchase and a working PS4 still runs most of the games people play every day. Warzone has been one of the main reasons to keep those machines busy, since it’s free to play and doesn’t need a PlayStation Plus subscription for its online modes. Once the servers on old consoles close, those players will either have to move platforms or stop playing.
Gaming lounges that charge per session should also plan ahead. Any PS4 units set aside for Warzone will need a new use, and centres that want to keep offering the game will need PS5 or Xbox Series consoles, or gaming PCs, before Season 1 arrives.
Your progress can follow you, but your COD Points have limits
The good news is that you don’t lose your account history. Activision’s support page says “Your full progression and content purchased with COD Points will carry over to any supported platform”, as long as you sign in with the same Activision account. That means your unlocks and the cosmetics you bought with points should be waiting when you log in on a PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC.
Unspent COD Points work differently. Activision says leftover points only move within the same console family, so PS4 balances go to PS5 and Xbox One balances go to Xbox Series X|S. Since the store on old consoles closed on June 25, you can’t spend those points on your PS4 or Xbox One any more. If you have a sizeable balance on a PS4, moving to a PS5 rather than a PC or Xbox is the only way to keep using it, and that’s worth factoring into which machine you buy next.
What to do before the Warzone servers on old consoles go dark
Start by checking that your PSN or Xbox account is linked to an Activision account. You can do this from the profile section on the official Call of Duty website, and it’s the step that protects your progression. Players who share a console with siblings or friends should be careful here, because whoever’s account is linked is the one that keeps the history.
Next, decide where you’re going. If a PS5 or Xbox Series console isn’t in the budget yet, a gaming PC or laptop is another supported route, though you’ll need decent hardware and a stable connection. Our guide to lowering your ping on MTN, Airtel, Glo and T2 will help whichever platform you land on, and you can see what else is arriving this month in our October 2026 game releases list.
Finally, keep an eye on the official Warzone platform update page for the Season 1 date. Activision has said its other Call of Duty games remain playable on PS4 and Xbox One, so your older titles aren’t affected, but for Warzone itself the move to current-generation hardware is now only a few weeks away.
