Nigerian gamers could soon have a reason to celebrate as MTN Nigeria has hinted that it may introduce a dedicated data plan designed specifically for online gaming.

The possibility came to light during a recent edition of Data on Trial, an interactive session where MTN engages with customers and answers questions about its products and services.

During the event, popular gaming content creator Khalamanja asked whether MTN had plans to introduce a special data bundle for gamers, similar to the streaming bundles already available for platforms such as YouTube.

Khalamanja’s Question on MTN’s Data on Trial

Responding to the question, MTN did not confirm an immediate launch but suggested that the idea is being considered. The company encouraged gamers to “watch this space,” a response many interpreted as a strong indication that dedicated gaming bundles could be on the way.

If introduced, the proposed gaming data plan could allow subscribers to enjoy online games with lower data costs, making multiplayer titles more affordable to play. Games such as Call of Duty Mobile, PUBG Mobile, EA SPORTS FC Mobile, eFootball, Mobile Legends, Free Fire, and other internet based games consume a significant amount of data, especially during long gaming sessions and frequent updates.

The announcement has generated excitement within Nigeria’s growing gaming community, where many players have long requested data plans tailored to gaming rather than general internet use. The high cost of mobile data has remained one of the biggest barriers to enjoying competitive online gaming.

A dedicated gaming bundle could also benefit content creators who livestream gameplay or regularly download large game updates. Depending on how MTN structures the service, subscribers may receive discounted access to gaming servers or selected gaming platforms without exhausting their regular data plans.

Although MTN has not revealed the pricing, launch date, or the games that would be covered, the company’s response has raised expectations that more details could be announced in the coming months.

Nigerian gamers will have to wait for an official announcement. However, MTN’s latest comments suggest that the company is listening to the gaming community and exploring new ways to support one of the country’s fastest growing digital entertainment sectors.
